Citrus trees have tall, dense canopies, and most applications aim to cover leaves and fruit throughout the tree. That is usually done with air-assisted (airblast) sprayers that project a fine spray upwards and sideways, or increasingly with spray drones. Both put fine droplets higher than a field boom, so wind and stability matter a great deal.

## The weather window

- **Delta T:** 2–8 °C. Fine droplets evaporate quickly in hot, dry air. See [Delta T](https://pulvecast.com/guides/delta-t).
- **Humidity:** avoid very dry afternoons, and wet foliage where the label advises against it. See [humidity and dew point](https://pulvecast.com/guides/humidity-and-dew-point).
- **Wind:** a light, steady breeze. Spray released at the top of the canopy is exposed to stronger wind than at ground level. See [wind speed for spraying](https://pulvecast.com/guides/wind-speed-for-spraying).
- **Inversion:** fine droplets projected upwards can remain suspended in an inversion layer. See [thermal inversion](https://pulvecast.com/guides/thermal-inversion).
- **Rain:** leave the rainfast period clear. See [rain and spraying](https://pulvecast.com/guides/rain-and-spraying).

## Crop-specific considerations

**Air-assisted sprayers.** Match air volume and nozzle direction to the canopy, so spray is directed into the trees rather than over them. Turn off outward-facing nozzles on the outer rows and at row ends where the label or local rules require it, and consider spraying the outer rows only when the wind blows into the grove.

**Neighbours and edges.** Groves are often near homes, roads and water. Plan around wind direction and label buffers. See [spray drift](https://pulvecast.com/guides/spray-drift).

**Bloom and pollinators.** Citrus flowers attract bees. Avoid bee-hazardous applications during bloom while bees are foraging, follow the label's pollinator statements and inform nearby beekeepers where required.

**Drones.** Drones can treat trees from above, but the downwash must penetrate a tall, dense canopy. Follow the manufacturer's height, speed and volume guidance for orchards. See [drone spraying weather](https://pulvecast.com/guides/drone-spraying-weather).

## Typical applications

Insecticides and miticides, fungicides, herbicides under the trees, and foliar nutrients or plant growth regulators in some programmes.

## Setting it up in PulveCast

There is no citrus preset, so use **Custom**. It starts from Delta T 2–8 °C, humidity 55–95 % and a Medium droplet class. Conservative starting points:

- Keep Delta T at 2–8 °C, or lower the maximum if you spray fine droplets on hot days.
- Set the droplet class to what your sprayer actually produces — often finer than a field boom — so the drift rating reflects your equipment.
- Lower the maximum wind from the 25 km/h default towards 15 km/h (about 9 mph) or to the label's limit. For drones, pick your [drone model](https://pulvecast.com/drones).
- Keep the thermal inversion threshold at the 1.5 °C default.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best weather for spraying an orchard?

A light, steady breeze, no inversion, Delta T within 2 to 8 °C and no rain within the rainfast period. Air-assisted sprayers produce fine droplets released high up, so be more cautious with wind and inversions than with a field boom.

### Can I spray citrus during bloom?

Only with products and timing allowed by the label. Avoid bee-hazardous applications while bees are foraging, and inform nearby beekeepers where required.
