Wheat is usually sprayed with herbicides early in the season and with fungicides as leaves and heads emerge. As a cool-season crop, it brings its own weather problems: cold mornings, frost, heavy dew and inversions, as well as hot, dry conditions in some regions near the end of the season.

## The weather window

## Crop-specific considerations

**Cold weather and frost.** Weeds grow slowly in cold weather and many herbicides act more slowly in them. Plants that have just been through a frost may not respond well. Common guidance is to spray when the crop and weeds are actively growing and to wait after a frost until they have recovered; follow the label.

**Growth stage.** Herbicide labels for cereals often limit application to specific crop growth stages. Spraying outside them can injure the crop.

**Fungicides and head coverage.** Leaf diseases are targeted around flag-leaf emergence, and head diseases around heading and flowering. Heads are vertical targets, so extension guidance often recommends nozzle setups that spray both forwards and backwards for better head coverage. Timing is usually set by crop stage rather than weather, which makes the weather window within those few days especially important.

**Dew.** Heavy dew is common in the crop in the morning and can dilute the spray. Wait until it has dried where the label advises it.
