# The best time of day to spray

There is no single best hour to spray. The right window is the period when several conditions line up at once: a light, steady wind blowing away from sensitive areas, no thermal inversion, Delta T in range, no rain on the way, and the crop and target in a state where the product will work. That window moves from day to day, so it has to be checked, not assumed.

## Early morning

**For:** cooler air and higher humidity keep [Delta T](https://pulvecast.com/guides/delta-t) low, and winds are often light.

**Against:** the night's [thermal inversion](https://pulvecast.com/guides/thermal-inversion) may still be in place around sunrise, and heavy dew can dilute the spray and make it run off. Very light wind at this hour is a warning sign, not a green light.

**In practice:** the best morning window usually starts once the dew has eased, the air has begun to mix, smoke rises freely and a light breeze is established.

## Midday and early afternoon

**For:** the air is well mixed, so inversions are rare, and wind direction is usually steady.

**Against:** on hot, dry days Delta T often passes 8 or 10, droplets evaporate quickly and plants may be heat or drought-stressed. Wind and gusts also tend to peak in the afternoon, and convective turbulence can lift fine droplets.

**In practice:** midday can be fine on mild or humid days. On hot days it is often the worst part of the day.

## Late afternoon and evening

**For:** temperature falls and humidity rises, bringing Delta T back into range, and wind often eases.

**Against:** as the sun goes down and the ground cools, an inversion can start to form, sometimes before sunset on clear, calm days. The window can close quickly.

**In practice:** a useful window on many days, but check the inversion status and wind, not just the clock.

## Night

In hot regions, some operators spray at night to avoid high Delta T. It can work when there is a steady breeze and the air stays mixed, for example under cloud. On clear, calm nights an inversion is likely, and night spraying then carries a high drift risk. Some labels restrict night application. It also makes it harder to see drift, sensitive areas and obstacles.

## Product type considerations

Keep these general points in mind and follow the label for specifics:

- **Herbicides**, particularly systemic ones, generally work best on actively growing weeds. Plants stressed by heat, drought or cold may take up less product.
- **Fungicides** are often applied preventively, timed around disease risk and leaf wetness. Coverage matters, so the droplet class and the Delta T window matter too.
- **Insecticides** are often timed to pest activity, which may point to a particular part of the day. Many are hazardous to pollinators.

## Bees and other pollinators

Avoid spraying products that are hazardous to bees when pollinators are foraging, especially on flowering crops and weeds. That usually means avoiding the warm, bright middle of the day, but early morning and evening windows must still be free of inversions. Follow the pollinator statements on the label, and tell nearby beekeepers in advance where local rules or good practice call for it.
